According to the Burden of Tobacco in Marathon County:
-Secondhand smoke is estimated to cause about 60 lung cancer deaths and about 800 deaths from heart disease in Wisconsin each year
-About 14% of all deaths in the county are directly attributed to smoking and 77% of those deaths are due to lung cancer
-An estimated 7,215 people in Wisconsin die from illnesses directly related to smoking
-In 2004, there were over 384 million packs of cigaretts sold in Wisconsin
Marathon County Health Experts say it is important when trying to quit that you use multiple techniques to be successful. They suggest joining a support group, using nicotine replacement therapy (such as nicotine gum, patches, or other medications), or finding other ways to releave the stress that can cause the craving (taking a brisk walk, calling a friend, etc.).
