Cancer Survivor Returns Back to Work at UWMC
Nolan "Whiz" Beck is Associate Campus Dean at UW Marathon County and is sharing his personal battle with cancer. Six months after invasive surgeries, he says he's ready to get back to his passion -- changing the lives of students.

Cancer may be hard to talk about for some people, but one man has come forward to share his personal fight with the disease.
Nolan "Whiz" Beck is Associate Campus Dean and the Director of Student Services at UW Marathon County. After overcoming renal cancer in 2002, it came back in February and spread to his brain, lungs and right leg. Six months after invasive surgeries, he says he's ready to get back to his passion -- changing the lives of students.
Returning students helping out at freshman orientation tell me he has a special way of influencing their college experience. "He helped to erase the ambiguities of getting into school, getting into college. [Nolan] kind of made the transition seamless. And chiefly because I've become very involved," says student Chase Boruch.
His youngest son, Troy was also at freshman orientation. Whiz says fighting cancer for a second time was all worth it to see that happen. As a husband and father of five children, he hopes his story can help anyone going through cancer right now.
This will be Beck's 11th year at UW Marathon County.
