GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- Green told supporters he knew his candidacy was a long shot, that beating an incumbent would be tough in a challenging year for Republicans.

Although he pledged to work with Doyle to move the state forward, Green also brought up the state Elections Board and its decision to ban him from using unregistered PAC money.

The Republican candidate thanked his family and campaign workers and told them they helped force debate on the issues of the day.

Governor Doyle becomes the first Democrat reelected governor in 32 years.

Doyle made his support for stem cell research a pivotal issue in the hard-fought governor's race.

The race was marked by millions of dollars spent on negative TV ads and by visits by high-profile politicians and celebrities.

AP exit poll results show Doyle held on to his traditional Democratic base by appealing to women and the poor.

Doyle also had an edge among independent voters, as well as union members.

Green drew strong support from religious voters and those who support the U.S. war in Iraq.
