UNDATED (AP) -- Democratic Governor Jim Doyle and Republican challenger Mark Green are winding up their hard-fought race with a last, hectic round of stops on this day before the election.
Doyle appeared in Milwaukee with actor Michael J. Fox, while Green started his day at Mike's Place diner in Oshkosh, where he mingled with customers eating breakfast.
Fox spoke to about 300 people at Serb Hall. The actor, who suffers from Parkinson's disease, spoke clearly but twitched and had to brace himself against a lectern.
He urged the crowd to vote for candidates who support expanding embryonic stem cell research, such as Doyle and Steve Kagen, the Democratic candidate for the Eighth District Congressional seat.
Green has voted against increasing federal funding for the research and expanding the number of stem cell lines available because human embryos would be destroyed in the process. But, if elected, has pledged $25 million to study a fledgling technique in which cells are extracted without destroying embryos.
Green said at Oshkosh he would work as governor to improve the economy and protect what he called the Wisconsin way of life. He says that includes faith, family and devotion to the outdoors.
