The Freecycle Network consist of more than 4,000 groups and 4 million members.

It's organizers say "It's a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in their own towns".

Each local group is moderated and keeps items that can be reused out of landfills, which is better for the environment.
