Funeral Home: Brainard
On August 22, 2013 James E. Berens was called home to his heavenly Father.
James was born in Marathon City on May 3, 1928. He was baptized in St. Mary’s Church in Marathon and confirmed October 3, 1950 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Marathon.
He was married to Arvilla Gresens on October 7, 1950 at St. Matthews and were blessed with three sons. Michael James Berens of Rib Mountain, Steven R. (Connie) Berens of Orlando, Florida, and Andrew L. Berens of Rib Mountain; grandchildren Cody Berens, Drew and Libby Berens of Wausau, and Ashley Berens of Panama City, Florida. Also, a brother Mervyn (Barbara) Berens of Eau Claire. Special nieces Sandy Gresens of Bloomington, MN and Kate (Mike) Lang. Special friends Gordon and Shirley Beilke. His very special grand dogs, Blue, Gunner, and Jasper.
James was preceded in death by his parents Otto and Adline (Mucha) Berens; father and mother-in-law Robert and Ella (Plautz) Gresens; brothers Wallace Berens and Leon (Mary) Berens; sisters Jean (Eddie) Uleman, and Violet Lang; brother-in-laws Harry (Helen) Gresens, Walter (Violet) Gresens, Alfred (Irma) Gresens, and Wilmer (Georgiette) Gresens.
At age 17 he joined the United States Coast Guard and served on the Great Lakes. He also served in the US Army in 1951 until 1953 with services in Korea. He was a lifetime member of VFW Local 388 in Wausau. James was employed as an electrician and retired in 1991.
James was an avid outdoorsman and loved to hunt and fish. He was also athletic and enjoyed playing golf with his sons whenever possible. He also coached and played baseball for many years.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, August 29, 2013 at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 600 Stevens Dr., Wausau. The Rev. Bruce Lamont will officiate. Burial will be in St. Matthew Lutheran Cemetery, Marathon. Visitation will take place from 4:00-7:00 pm on Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at Brainard Funeral Home, 522 Adams St., Wausau, and again on Thursday from 9:30 AM until the time of service at the church.
The family would like to thank the wonderful, caring people at Gardenside Crossing at North Central Health Care and Dr. Mike Umland for his concerns about Jim’s health.
