DeLoris Sandquist, 90, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 18th, 2013 at Garden Side Crossing of Mount View Health Care Center. Her devoted husband Mel and many other family members were at her side.

DeLoris was born on April 5th, 1923 in Aniwa, WI, the oldest child of the late George and Olga (Liskow) Spanbauer. She married Melvin Sandquist on August 15, 1948 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Aniwa. Prior to marriage, DeLoris taught at Eland State Graded School and Wittenberg Public School.

DeLoris joined her husband in business at Wausau Monument Company, Grand Avenue, which they owned and operated for 32 years. They sold the business in 1980, and after two years of retirement, purchased Tri-State Monument in LaCrosse, WI where they spent eleven years. Although Wausau remained their primary home, they enjoyed LaCrosse also, the Mississippi River, the beautiful bluffs, and friends and family there.

DeLoris was active civically, along with her husband in many areas. She was active in her church, Immanuel Lutheran, as a member of the altar guild, and Women of the Church. She was a Red Cross volunteer for many years, and one of the first chairpersons of the Marathon County Hospital Equipment Pool, working through the Jaycettes. She and her husband were also active in Monument Builders of North America on both State and National levels, and were charter members of the Monument Industry Education Foundation. She and Mel were past members of the Minocqua Country Club, and long time members of the Wausau Curling Club. DeLoris also served as a board member and past secretary of the Wausau YWCA, was a member of the Shriner’s Hospital Auxiliary and White Shrine, and also a member of the Wausau Women’s Club.

Through the years DeLoris and her family enjoyed their cottage on Lake Minocqua. She enjoyed her children and grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She enjoyed vacationing with her family during the holiday season in Fort Myers Beach, FL. In later years, she and Mel enjoyed wintering there with family and friends that would come to visit.

On August 15th Mel and DeLoris celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.

DeLoris is survived by her husband Melvin; four children: Craig (Diana) Sandquist, Cape Coral, FL; Christine (Jon) Sass, Florence, MA; Dr. Corey (Susan) Sandquist, Wausau; Cathryn (Jerry Yushta) Trueblood, Onalaska, WI. Nine grandchildren: Candyce (Brendan) Duffy; Molly and Emma Sass; Sarah, Melissa, and Matthew Sandquist; Olivia, Elizabeth, and Kaitlyn Trueblood; and three great grandchildren; Justyce, Dylan, and Brendan. She is also survived by her brother Russell Spanbauer, Aniwa; and two sisters, Joyce (Kenneth) Strasser, Wausau; and Patricia (Perry) Mortenson, Merrill. She was preceded in death by an infant brother, Forrest Spanbauer.
