Rev. Herbert P. Zoromski, 87, formerly of Galloway, died Wednesday, July 10, 2013 at KTRC – Colonial Manor, Wausau, under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services.
He was born on August 22, 1925 in Milwaukee, the son of the late John and Frances (Janikowski) Zoromski.
When Father Herb was a year old, his family moved to a farm four miles from Galloway. He received his elementary education at Birch Grove School and Johnson Mill School, Galloway. His high school years were spent at Washington Junior High, Bevent and St. Mary’s High, Orchard Lake, Michigan. He attended St. Mary’s College in Michigan, from which he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy; he then entered Kenrick Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri.
Father Herb was ordained on May 19, 1951 at St. Joseph Cathedral in La Crosse by Bishop John Patrick Tracy. His first assignment was as Assistant Pastor at St. Hedwig’s in Thorp. After three years, he was transferred to SS. Peter & Paul Parish, Independence from 1954 to 1963. He then was transferred to St. John-Heffron and Guardian Angels in Almond for a year. From 1964 until 1968, Father Herb was appointed pastor at St. Mary’s in Altoona and from 1968 until 1972 was at St. Mark’s in Rothschild. He then was assigned back at SS. Peter & Paul in Independence until 1975, when he was appointed Pastor at St. Agnes, Callon until 1978. Father Herb was appointed Pastor at Sacred Heart in Polonia from 1978 until 1989. He then served as Pastor of both St. Joseph’s in Galloway and St. John’s, Peplin. In 1990, Father Herb was Pastor at St. Joseph’s, Galloway and St. Ladislaus, Bevent until 1995. Father Herb continued to say masses for numerous churches in the area until 2010.
Father Herb was a member of the Knights of Columbus St. Isadore Council 5008, Tigerton and received the 4th degree in Milwaukee in 1959. He was also a proud member of the Bevent Lions Club. Father Herb enjoyed many sports, but especially hunting and fishing. He loved watching wildlife on his land in Galloway. In 2010, he left his paradise and moved to Primrose in Wausau.
Survivors include, five brothers, Joe (Theresa) Zoromski, Neenah, Emerick (Dorothy) Zoromski, Galloway, Harry Zoromski, Galloway, Gerald (Bonnie) Zoromski, Weston and Rudy (Rita) Zoromski, Thorp; one sister, Mary Ann (Ron) Slaby, Mosinee; three sisters-in-law, Lil Zoromski, Holcombe, Audrey Zoromski, Oconto and Patti Zoromski, Madison; two uncles, Emil (Lorraine) Janikowski, Neenah and August Zoromski, Ringle and one aunt, Grace (Bernard) Omernik, Bevent. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, John, Gene and James, and two sisters-in-law, Florence and Irene.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am on Monday, July 15, 2013 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Galloway. Monsignor Joseph Diermeier will officiate. Rev. Augustine Bentil and Rev. Al Slowiak will concelebrate. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday from 3pm until the time of an Evening Prayer at 7pm and again on Monday from 9am until the time of the Mass, all at the church. In lieu of flowers, a memorial in Father Herb’s name will be established at a later date. Schmidt & Schulta Funeral Home, Wittenberg is assisting the family with arrangements.
