Funeral Home: Brainard
Thomas Robert Gertschen, loving husband of Lisa Gertschen, passed away peacefully at home with his wife and daughter next to him on Saturday, July 6, 2013 in Wausau, WI. Tom was welcomed into the Kingdom of Heaven after a courageous battle with Leukemia. Tom never gave up hope. He never complained, maintaining a brave and cheerful outlook of an optimistic future-even through countless chemotherapy treatments, hospitalizations, and pain. He continued to be a provider and involved with his family.

Thomas was born on December 5, 1956 in Wausau to the late Norbert Gertschen and the late Valda (Rau) Gertschen. He was raised in Mosinee, WI and is a graduate of Mosinee High School and North Central Technical College. Tom was employed for 9 years at Urban Construction as a draftsperson, 13 years at Wimmer Construction as an engineering supervisor, 4 years at Consolidated Building Service as a project manager, and 10 years at Lewis Construction as a senior estimator. Tom would like to especially thank Lewis Construction for their support and prayers they have given during this difficult time.

Tom enjoyed spending time with family and friends including golfing, and traveling. Tom and his wife enjoyed their 20th wedding anniversary to New Orleans on Amtrack. He also loved all animals.

Tom married Lisa (Papetti) on May 25, 1991 in Shawano, WI. They live in Wausau and together have two children Ashleigh and Arran. Tom also has two sons Steven and Edward from a previous marriage.

Survivors include his wife of 22 years Lisa Gertschen; daughter Ashleigh Gertschen; sons Steven (Elizabeth) Gertschen, Edward Gertschen, and Arran Gertschen; brother Mark Gertschen; one dear sister-in-law Suzette (Glenn) Ziemer; nephew Seth Ziemer; and granddaughter McKinley Gertschen.

Tom is preceded in death by his parents-in-law Leonard and Joyce Papetti.

Memorial service will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, July 20, 2013 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 600 Stevens Drive, Wausau. The Rev. William Knaack will officiate. Visitation will take place from 9:00 am until the time of service at the church on Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family for a charity of their choice.

Brainard Funeral Home is assisting the family.
