Donald Raymond Roll, 85, of of Wausau, transcended to his final home on Saturday, April 28th. Don was born to the late Otto and Agnes Roll, September 8, 1927, in Wausau, WI.
Don was stationed at Kimpo Aire Base in South Korea with the 475th fighter group and was a mechanic and crew chief on flight lines for P38's and P51's. Don worked as a machinist, apprenticing with his father - in - law at Curtis Company. He also worked at Hammer Blowe Tool Company and Murry Machine Company in Wausau, as well as Boeing Airplane Company in Seattle, Washington.
An accomplished woodworker, he built the family homes, including the furniture and cabinets. He also built and raced boats in his younger years.
Don enjoyed hunting small and large game in Wisconsin, Michigan, Canada and out west. Even more than hunting he loved fishing.
Don played drums for 25 years with local band, “Jerry Dee & the Ranchman. He also drummed with Nashville stars Johnny Cash, The Statler Brothers, and June Carter and Tammy Wynette.
Don was a lifetime member of Holy Name Church in Wausau and member of the VFW and American Legion.
Don is survived by five children: Carrie; Jamie, Linda,
Jeffery, and Daniel; seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild; and friend Mary Ann Wyro.
Don was preceded in death by his wife Betty; brothers Wallace, Frank, sisters Alice and Jeanie.
Memorial mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Parish, 1104 S. 9th Ave., Wausau. Rev. Norman Boneck will officiate. Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the family for a donation to the Aspirus Hospice House.
