Walter F. Hedtke, 94, Hatley, died Sunday, March 3, 2013 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.
He was born on April 12, 1918 in Oshkosh, the son of the late Fred and Adelaide (Richter) Hedtke.
On October 20, 1940 Walter was united in marriage to the love of his life, Tillie Will in Ringle. She survives.
Walter and his brother Fred owned and operated Hedtke’s IGA Store in Hatley until 2007. He was honored as the Lion’s Club Man of the Year in 1974. Wally served on the Hatley Village Board and on the Hatley school Board for a number of years. He was a member of the Lion’s Club and the volunteer Fire Department in Hatley. Wally was instrumental in bringing the veneer mill to Hatley. He was also a village historian and his writing was published in a local history book. Walter and Tillie enjoyed traveling, especially on the Jerry Goetsch tours. They travelled to Europe, Hong Kong, the Caribbean, Norway and Russia. Walter was very active in his church, St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, and served on the church council for many years. His faith in Jesus Christ was the most important thing in his life and now he is with his Lord.
Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Tillie Hedtke; two daughters, Dr. Susan Helberg, Jacksonville, FL and Shelley (Ray) Fawley, Watertown; two sons, Jonathon Hedtke, Boston, MA and Jeffrey Hedtke, Hatley; four grandchildren, John Helberg, Heather (Chris) Boucher, Kyle Fawley and Jessica Fawley; two great-grandchildren, Sven and Freya Helberg and his brother Fred Hedtke. He is also survived by other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, Walter was preceded in death by his sister, Elaine Edens and a great-grandson, Rurik Helberg.
The Funeral Service will be held at 11am on Friday, March 8, 2013 at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, Schofield. Rev. Jeff Mahnke will officiate. Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, town of Norrie. Visitation will be on Friday from 9am until the time of services at the church. Schmidt & Schulta Funeral Home, Wittenberg is assisting the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Northland Lutheran High School, St. Peter Lutheran Church or the charity of your choice.
