Irene E. Opper, 94, formerly of Birnamwood, died Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at the Homme Home of Wittenberg under the care of LeRoyer Hospice, Antigo.
She was born on August 17, 1918, the daughter of the late Edward and Elizabeth (Zwieg) Fandrey.
On October 26, 1942 Irene was united in marriage to Vernon Opper in Shawano. He preceded her in death on June 1, 1990.
Irene worked as a housekeeper in the Birnamwood area and also was a cook at the Birnamwood grade school and high school for over 35 years. She was a longtime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Birnamwood and its Ladies Aid. Irene enjoyed gardening, but especially spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include one daughter, Barbara (Gary) Draeger, Hatley; three grandchildren, Julie (Jim) Juza, Hudson, Renee Draeger, Waupaca and Carrie (Luke) Budleski, Hatley; five great-grandchildren, Ashley and Emily Juza and Will, Reid and Ella Budleski; two brothers, Marvin (Evelyn) Fandrey, Ringle and Herbert (Noreen) Fandrey, Birnamwood; three brothers-in-law, Melvin (Pat) Opper, Leonard (Mary) Opper and Norman Opper, all of Birnamwood and six sisters-in-law, Adeline Fandrey, Wausau, Stella Fandrey, Eland, Ruby Fandrey, Birnamwood, Agnes (Bernard) Krueger, Woodruff, Lucille Dietzen, Clintonville and Adeline Opper, Birnamwood. Irene is also survived by many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by nine brothers and five sisters.
The Funeral Service will be held at 11am on Monday, January 21, 2013 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Birnamwood. Rev. Dean Bertsch will officiate. Interment will be in Forest Cemetery, Birnamwood. Visitation will be on Sunday from 4pm until 8pm at Schmidt & Schulta Funeral Home, Birnamwood and on Monday from 10am until the time of services at the church.
