Lorraine R. Thompson, 97, formerly of Mattoon, died Monday, January 14, 2013 at the Homme Home of Wittenberg. She was born on October 16, 1915 in White Rock, South Dakota, the daughter of the late Edward and Flossie (Johnson) Anderson. Lorraine met Merril Thompson at a Lutheran Youth Rally and they were united in marriage on July 12, 1936 in St. Charles, MN. He preceded her in death on August 9, 1997. Lorraine and Merril had one daughter whom they raised in southern California. After retirement they moved to the Antigo area to be closer to their daughter and grandchildren. Though Lorraine’s formal education ended with high school due to the untimely death of her mother, she was a life-long learner and often spoke of the “University of Hard Knocks” as her alma mater. Lorraine always put others needs before her own, she early on became the “go to” person for those needing support and solutions. She enjoyed antiques, genealogy, sewing, decorating, gardening and always reading. Survivors include her daughter, Karen Steinhauer, Mattoon; three sisters, Betty Braun, Sioux Fall, S.D., Elda Southworth, Ft. Davis, TX and Carol (Neil) Bursheim, McIntosh, MN and four grandchildren, Mary Wood, Verona, WI, Chris (Mary) Steinhauer, Karl (Kim) Steinhauer and Patty (Peter) Mosher, all of Mattoon. She is also survived by numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many friends “adopted” into her heart and family. In addition to her parents and husband, Lorraine was preceded in death by her step-mother, Elenore Anderson; her brother, Paul Anderson and son-in-law, Christian Steinhauer. A Memorial Service will be held at 11am on Friday, January 18, 2013 at St. John Lutheran Church, Mattoon. Rev. Dean Bertsch will officiate. Inurnment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, town of Hutchins, Shawano County at a later date. Visitation will be on Friday from 10am until the time of services at the church.
