Helen W. Johnson, 93, formerly of Ringle, died Saturday, January 12, 2013 at the Marywood Center in Wausau, under the care of her family and Aspirus Comfort Care & Hospice Services, Wausau.
Born in Birnamwood on November 11, 1919, the day President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed for the first Armistice Day (Veterans Day) commemoration, Helen was the second child and first daughter of the late Edmund and Hattie (Gaudtke) Mauritz. Helen married Norman Johnson on July 2, 1938, in Wausau; and together they would raise 8 children. They were married for 45-years before his death on March 11, 1984. The couple farmed in the Township of Ringle for many years until their retirement. After the tragic loss of her son, David, Helen would raise David's son, Daniel as one of her own.
Helen was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Birnamwood and St. Paul's Ladies Aid. Helen also donated her time as a volunteer at Bethesda Thrift Shop. Helen's first love was for family; her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and her one great-great grandchild. Helen also enjoyed gardening, sewing and volunteering as a member of the WWER Club for many years. As the family matriarch, Helen will be remembered as patient, compassionate and giving; and she will be missed by all those who knew her.
Survivors include five children, Nora (Jay) Schultz, Ringle, Dennis (Sylvia) Johnson, Schofield, Susan Suchon, Mosinee, Cindy (George) Apfel, Rothschild and Linda (Thom) Hirsch, Wausau; 8 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one sister-in-law, Beryl Mauritz and many nieces and nephews. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, three children: Maryann, David and infant son, Kenneth, five brothers and two sisters.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, January 16th from 4 PM to 7 PM at the Schmidt & Schulta Funeral Home, Birnamwood and on Thursday, January 17th from 10 AM until the funeral service at 11 AM, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Birnamwood, with Reverend Dean Bertsch officiating. Interment will be in Forestville Cemetery, Township of Easton.
