Nick B. Knitter, 93, Galloway, died Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at his home.
He was born on September 20, 1919 in the town of Alban, the son of the late Frank and Frances (Kaminski) Knitter.
On October 10, 1942, Nick was united in marriage to Ann Bushman. She preceded him in death on December 5, 2011.
Nick was a U.S. Army veteran serving during WWII and was a Bronze Star recipient. After he was discharged, Nick owned and operated a garage in Galloway. He then started farming in the town of Franzen and retired after over 40 years. Nick was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Galloway and the St. Joseph’s society. He was also a member of the Elderon Memorial Post #8068 VFW and the Nelson-Kaminski American Legion Post #509, Rosholt. In 2010, he was very proud to be able to go on the Honor Flight with his son Ron. He enjoyed traveling, working on his lawn and playing cards with family and friends.
Survivors include three sons, Ron (Jan) Knitter, Galloway, Bruce Knitter, Stevens Point and Patrick Knitter, Galloway; four daughters, Karen Collins, Idaho Falls, Idaho, Barbara Knitter, Rothschild, Debra (Dennis) Pucket, Merrill and Pamela (Peter) Flees, Lake Mathews, California; 17 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; one sister, Evelyn Schulist; two sisters-in-law, Agnes Knitter and Bernice Kleman and three brothers-in-law, John (Sadie) Bushman, Ernie (Mavis) Bushman and Harry Bushman. He is also survived by other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents and wife, Nick was preceded in death by two sons-in-law, Don Collins and Frank “Chip” Holmes; three brothers, Joe, John and Frank, Jr. and six sisters, Leona, Mary, Martha, Alice, Delores and Regina.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11am on Monday, January 7, 2013 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Galloway. Rev. Augustine Bentil will officiate. Interment will be in the parish cemetery with military rites conducted by the Elderon Memorial Post #8068 VFW. Visitation will be on Monday from 9am until the time of services at the church. Schmidt & Schulta Funeral Home, Wittenberg is assisting the family with arrangements. The family guestbook and condolences are available at schmidtschulta.com.
