Arlene E. “Aunt Skinny,” Eckes was born in Wausau on June 29, 1921 to the late Nicholas and Margaret (Boening) Eckes. On November 24, 2012 she passed away at home after a courageous 7 year battle with cancer, surrounded by her loving family.

Arlene retired in1982 from the former American Can in Rothschild, WI, after 42 years of service. She enjoyed traveling, playing cards monthly with a group of friends, working crossword puzzles, and until a year ago, walking 1-2 miles each day.

Although never married, she was a mother to 3 generations of nieces and nephews, who all called her “Aunt Skinny.” She loved babysitting and spoiling everyone.

Survivors include sister Doris Bornowski of Stratford, a brother Eugene Eckes of Wausau, a brother-in-law Orville Lodholz of Wausau, and her little adopted baby sister Marion Will of California. She is also survived by ten nieces and nephews, Shirley (Merritt) Gleason, Patrick (Carol) Prieve, Mary Beth (Butch Bliese) Tolley, Terry (Mary) Prieve, Ken (Sharon) Prieve, Jim (Lori) Bornowski, Allen Bornowski, Barb (Larry) Aschebrock, Karen Maier, and Jamie (Mark) Lemke; 21 great nieces and nephews Debra Gleason, Michael (Lisa) Gleason, Sue (Tim) Walter, Keith Prieve, Kevin (Brenda) Prieve, Stephen (Stephanie) Tolley, David (Sue Ann) Tolley, Paul (Becky) Prieve, Tim Prieve, April (Jake) Pribnow, Melissa (Terry) Fleming, Scott and Todd Bornowski, Jarrett Parker, Ashley Bornowski, Aaron Bornowski, Leah (Eric) Stubb, Lora (Brian) Keith, Trish and Lorrie Maier, Christopher (Laurie) Lemke; 18 great great nieces and nephews, Samantha, Brian, and Brett Gleason, Matthew and Aiden Walter, Ryan Prieve, Blaine Tolley, MaKenzi and Connor Tolley, Dalton and Emma Hodges, Kurt Prieve, Casey and Jared Prieve, Jayden Pribnow, Emma and Lindsay Fleming, and Mallory Smith.

Besides her parents, Arlene was preceded in death by her sister and brother-in-law Loretta Lodholz and Harold Prieve, sister Mildred in infancy, brother Leroy “Sonny” Eckes during WWII, a brother-in-law Arnold Bornowski, a sister-in-law Bernice Eckes, and two great nephews Brian Gleason and Andy Prieve.

Funeral Service will be held at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at Brainard Funeral Home, 522 Adams St, Wausau. Visitation will be held from 3:00 pm until the time of the service at the funeral home on Wednesday. Burial will be at Pine Grove Cemetery Thursday, November 29, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. with Stephen Tolley officiating.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Skinny’s Angel, Julianne Scesnick, who visited often and always brought Culver’s Butter Burger and custard.
