Jon R. Aton, 78, Weston, died Friday, November 23, 2012 at Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation Center – Kennedy Park, Weston.
He was born on March 6, 1934 in Madison, the son of the late Rex and Anna (Stempke) Aton.
Jon was united in marriage to Carol Potratz, she preceded him in death in May of 1975. He then was united in marriage to Mary (Maahs) Morgan on June 19, 1976 in Tilleda. She survives.
Jon was a U.S. Navy veteran serving in the Korean War. He then went on to college at UW Lacrosse and graduated with a BA in education. Jon taught for the Wittenberg-Birnamwood school district for 31 years and also coached football, baseball and track and was the Athletic Director until retiring in 1989. He was a member of the Bloecher-Johnson American Legion Post #502. Jon enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading, golfing, bowling and the occasional trip to the casino.
Survivors include his wife, Mary; five children, Jon (Linda) Aton, New Richmond, Sue (Jesse) Ortiz, Vallejo, CA, Steve (Jenni) Aton, Red Granite, Julie Aton, Milwaukee and Shelly (Mike) Miller, Weston; nine grandchildren, Stephanie and Matthew Ortiz, Luke, Noah, Jackson and Wyatt Aton, Jill (Chad) Kees, Jamie Miller and Sarah Block; two great-grandchildren, Fox Kees and Rayna Miller and daughter-in-law, Bonnie Morgan. Jon is also survived by other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents and first wife, Jon was preceded in death by two sons, Joey Aton and Mitch Morgan and one sister, Marge.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11am on Thursday, November 29, 2012 at Schmidt & Schulta Funeral Home, Wittenberg. Rev. Amy Meyer will officiate. Military rites will be conducted by the Bloecher-Johnson American Legion Post #502. Visitation will be on Thursday from 9am until the time of services at the funeral home. Inurnment will take place at a later date in Kingston Cemetery, Merrimac. The family guestbook and condolences are available at schmidtschulta.com.
