Lois G. Spear, age 85, of Wausau died on Nov. 7, 2012 at Lili Assisted Living in Schofield, Wisconsin.

Lois Spear, daughter of Alfred and Meta (Messer) Johnson, was born on September 6, 1927 in the Township of Caledonia, Wisconsin, in her parent's farmhouse. The eldest of three children, Lois helped with the farming and walked to a one room schoolhouse through eighth grade. She graduated from Portage High School with the class of 1945 and then completed her nurse's training in Madison. She met Charles (Charlie) Spear from Boston, while she was working as a nurse in Milwaukee. They married in 1949, lived in Wauwatosa, and moved to Wausau in 1954. She continued part-time work as a nurse until the early 1960s when she was a mother of five.

Lois was an avid gardener and enjoyed raising flowers and vegetables that she shared with her extensive network of friends and neighbors, as well as freezing and canning food for the long Wisconsin winters. She was an excellent cook; many will remember her famous cinnamon rolls, cookies and Christmas stollen. Knitting was one of her passions; family and friends continue to enjoy her beautiful and intricate projects.

Lois was an avid and competitive golfer, curler and tennis player. She was the skip of a curling team that won the US Women's Senior National's championship. She was a faithful member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church for almost 60 years. Lois was proud to have earned her Chartered Life Underwriters (CLU) designation and assisted in the Spear insurance business.

Lois loved family reunions, trips and outings with her children, then grandchildren, and her extended family. She also enjoyed trips with Charlie in their antique cars. She had a generous spirit and a kindness of heart that will be missed by many.

Her husband, Charles Spear, preceded her in death in 2010.

Lois is survived by her brothers Harold and Alvin Johnson of Portage; her five children, Jack Spear, Gerri Lardinois (Galen), Bill Spear (Bonnie), Thomas Spear, Margaret Betteridge (Brian); her six grandchildren, Sara Kaminski (Joe), Ben Spear, Katie Lardinois, Nicole, Eliza and Sylvia Betteridge; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday Nov. 18, 2012 at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Weston Ave. Visitation will be held from 12 noon until the time of service at the church. Friends and family are invited to a celebration of life at Greenwood Hills Country Club at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. Burial will take place at St. Paul's Lutheran Church Cemetery in the township of Caledonia, WI on Monday, Nov. 19, 2012.
