Thomas A. Frey, age 91 of Wausau, died Friday, October 5, 2012 at his home.

He was born on November 14, 1921 in Wausau, son of the late Forest and Gertrude (Moran) Frey. On August 16, 1948 he married Barbara Packard. She preceded him in death in November of 2001. Thomas served his country in the US Army during WWII. He was a medic and part of the “Merrills Marauders”. He also saw action in Burma.

Thomas attended the University of Wisconsin where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Economics. He then attended the University of Arizona, earning his Master’s degree in international business. He went on to work for Allstate Insurance for 35 years. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW.

He loved animals, and had several special dogs during his life including, Tucker, Goldie, Sam, Raggie and Flash. During his time in the army, he had a special mule, #72, and he carried his picture with him. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He spent the last 50 summers of his life in the Woodruff area. Winters he spent in Redondo Beach, CA where his son lives. He was a fixture at the Wausau YMCA where he worked out for 30 years and made many friends.

Survivors include his son, Jonathan (Gail) Frey, Redondo Beach, CA; his daughter, Susan Strobel (fiancée Michael Walker), Denver, CO; nephew Thomas Davis, Wausau; and three grandchildren, David Frey, Chase Kernan and Aidan Kernan.

He was preceded in death by his wife Barbara, his sister, Margaret Davis, nephews Richard and Steven Davis, and his special friend, Gerri Vanderweerd.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 10, 2012 at the First United Methodist Church, 903 Third St. Wausau. Rev. Gerald Morris will officiate. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau, where military honors will be performed. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday all at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church, 903 Third St. Wausau.

Brainard Funeral Home, Wausau is assisting the family with arrangements.
