Armin W. Schmidt, 89, Wittenberg, died Thursday, May 31, 2012 at the Homme Home of Wittenberg under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services. He was born on February 19, 1923 in Shepley, the son of the late John and Helen (Dumde) Schmidt. Armin became a child of God when he was baptized on March 18, 1923 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Wittenberg. He was confirmed in the same church on April 25, 1937. Armin was a faithful member of St. Paul's and served on the Board of Elders, taught Sunday School and was on the Board of Finance. In his community, Armin served as a member of the School board for the former Hennig School district for many years. On June 14, 1947 Armin became the beloved husband of Joyce Timm Hoffman. They were married at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Wittenberg, where they were life-long members. Armin and Joyce resided their married life on the farmstead where Armin had lived since age 14. Armin farmed in the township of Almon and drove truck for his uncle Alvin Pukall. He enjoyed telling his children and grandchildren that he hauled the arches for the airline hangars at the St. Paul Airport in Minnesota. After retiring from truck driving and farming, he worked for Consolidated Badger in Wittenberg for 29 years. In his retirement years, Armin enjoyed gardening, wood-working and hunting with his sons and grandsons. He enjoyed doing things with his grandchildren and his nieces and nephews, including building tree houses and hunting shacks. Armin loved to sing for his own entertainment. The neighbors often chided him about his singing when he worked in the garden. When he was still farming, the cows were often serenaded with country western songs and hymns.
