Update: Wausau's City Square Renamed The 400 Block

Tuesday, the Wausau Common Council voted in favor of renaming City Square The 400 Block.

On March 8, the council chose City Square as the name for the downtown green space, but the next day Mayor Jim Tipple vetoed that decision.

He says the council originally should have gone along with the public's wishes. Nearly 60 percent of voters chose The 400 Block. City Square came in second place with 21 percent of the vote.

District One Alderman Bill Nagle voted in favor of changing the space to The 400 Block after going door-to-door to nearly 1,000 houses in his district.

His constituents told him it's time the city council moves on.

"The general feeling of the people in my district was, we should get on with business. I think it was a real consensus that we spent far too much time on this," Nagle said.

Especially, he says, when the council must deal with difficult financial issues and public employee contracts.

Nagle says the naming of The 400 Block was meant to be a uniting effort, and it was important constituents were heard.

Also Tuesday, Karen Kellbach was appointed by the council to fill the empty district 8 seat.
