WI Boy Scouts Collect 66 Tons of Food for Hungry
MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Boy Scouts in Milwaukee County are doing their part to feed the hungry.
Thousands of scouts went door to door in Milwaukee, Racine and Waukesha counties to collect food. The final tally Saturday: nearly 66 tons of food.
The food was gathered on behalf of Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin, the food bank formerly known as America's Second Harvest of Wisconsin.
The food will be distributed to food pantries, meal programs and shelters throughout Milwaukee County.
Bonnie Bellehumeur is the food bank's president. She says her group is grateful for the scouts' efforts.
She says the food bank provides food for 330,000 people, nearly one-third of them children.
The Boy Scouts collected nearly 80 tons of food last year. They've collected more than 1,500 tons since 1988.
