United Way Parade Drives For Change

People lined Jefferson Street in Wausau today to see the annual United Way parade. Each year the parade kicks off a new campaign for united Way. This year's theme is "Driving Change the United Way."

The parade is also a perfect chance for community organizations like The Boys and Girls Scouts and Big Brother, Big Sister of Northcentral Wisconsin to show locals what they're doing in the community.

The Leader family from Schofield make going to the parade a yearly tradition. Valerie Leader and her two boys were out before 10:00am this morning, saving their spot for the parade. Even though it was a little chilly at first, both mom and the boys agree the parade is worth the wait.

"It's always nice to see their faces ar the end of the day and how much fun they had," Leader told NewsChannel 7.

Event organizers were also impressed with this years turnout.

"I think it's about the community demonstrating how supportive they are of United Way and how important the United Way is to them and just showing a lot of spirit for our campaign," United Way Campaign Chair Gary Bezucha said.

Bezucha also told NewsChannel 7 that the United Way is hoping to raise 10% more money this year, as more people are in need of asistance now than ever before.
