Being shot in the line of duty is one of the greatest risks police officers face. But it's a reality that happens all too often.

After going through a harrowing ordeal, two Grand Rapids police officers were given special recognition Tuesday night.

City leaders and members of the public met at the Grand Rapids Fire Department to give a nod to Officers Rusty Roe and Dave Drinkwine.

On Oct. 7th, the officers' worst nightmare came true. After going to serve a routine warrant, Officer Rusty Roe was shot in the shoulder. His bullet proof vest saved his life.

His colleague, Officer Dave Drinkwine was shot at, but escaped physically unharmed.

Gregory Long has been charged with attempted murder, but he was ruled not competent to stand trial and was ordered treatment.

Tuesday, both officers were in the spotlight, given special recognition from the township.

"I think it's just showing that the community cares for their officers. There's been a lot of community help and support throughout the whole thing," said Officer Drinkwine.

Officer Roe says he's a lot more aware of his surroundings after being shot, but says it's just part of the job.

"I couldn't see myself doing anything else. I enjoy it every day," he said.

Roe was given the purple heart award; Drinkwine received the meritorious conduct award.

Both men say they are honored, but were only doing what they were trained for.
