Marshfield Asked to Halt Prayers Before Meetings

MARSHFIELD, Wis. (AP) -- The Marshfield city attorney says he plans to tread carefully as he responds to a group's request that the City Council halt its practice of praying before meetings.

City Attorney John Hutchinson says he wants to be certain that whatever position the city takes will stand up in court. He says he wants to make sure the reply doesn't lead to unnecessary litigation.

Hutchinson has promised to reply to the Madison-based Freedom From Religion Foundation in 30 to 45 days.

Mayor Chris Meyer tells the Marshfield News-Herald he sees both sides of the issue. He says it's complicated, and he agrees with the restraint.

Annie Laurie Gaylor is the president of the atheists' group. She says her group took action after a member notified them of the City Council prayers.
