The D.C. Everest High School student council is holding a special fundraiser this week. They're hoping some friendly competition will encourage students to help support the community. Each grade level is challenged to see who can use their homecoming spirit to pack the shelves at the Neighbors' Place food pantry in Wausau.
"It's a competition between the classes for homecoming so the class who collects the most food items is the winner," says junior Mai Xee Vang.
The stock on some of the shelves at the Neighbors' Place is getting low, which is why students are helping out.
"We said we would do it of course because we always want to give back to the community and help out whatever way we can," says senior Ashley King.
This year, staff at the food pantry serve about 60 to 70 different families each day, an increase over previous years. And right now, donations are down so they say they really appreciate help from the students.
"We're absolutely thrilled to see them doing this and very excited to see what they bring in this week," says Tom Rau, director of the Neighbors' Place.
The winning class will take home a secret prize from the student council.
Donations will be collected at the school all week, and at the game and parade Friday night.
You can also drop off any garden extras or other fresh foods at the Neighbors' Place office downtown.
