Habitat for Humanity of Langlade County is looking for a new partner family for 2014. The organization is now accepting applications for a family who needs safe and affordable housing.
Amber and Kyle Crum have been in their brand new Habitat home for four months, and they couldn't be more grateful.
"It's a fantastic opportunity for a family," Amber said. "Two years yesterday was our anniversary and we have a home of our own - that's more than I could ever asked for," she said.
Kyle uses a wheelchair and had always struggled to find accessibility, even in his own home.
"It's a sense of freedom that I haven't had because everywhere else I've lived there's always been restrictions or areas that I couldn't access," he said.
One of the best features of the Crum's new Antigo home is that it's ground level, that means there are no ramps, which can be quite dangerous, especially in the winter.
"Every other house I've been in has a ramp. With the snow and the ice it's just always a bear to get up and down. It's so nice to just be able to roll into the house," Crum said.
Now Kyle is hoping to raise $9,000 for a therapy dog. He has his sights set on Baxter, a yellow lab being trained by Capable Canines of Wisconsin. Baxter is learning how to pick up items off the floor, use light switches and even retrieve items from Kyle's backpack.
"It'll just make me more independent in the community," he said.
There are several qualifications needed to be considered becoming a partner family with Habitat for Humanity of Langlade County. Families must currently live in Langlade County and have inadequate housing. Family size and finances are also considered.
People can apply at hfh-wi-lang.huterra.com or can call 715-627-7307.
If you'd like to help Kyle Crum raise money for a therapy dog, you can make donations at CoVantage Credit Union in his name.
