General Vang Pao Memorial Tribute Saturday

The Wausau Area Hmong Mutual Association is hosting a tribute to General Vang Pao who passed away earlier this month.

The Hmong leader will be honored Saturday during a service at the Rothschild Pavillion from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.

General Vang Pao led the Hmong community for more than half a century, inspiring many along the way. His passing on January 6th, at 81 years old, has left many in the area, nation and world heartbroken.

The memorial service will include cultural rituals, speakers and a chance to watch live footage of General Pao's funeral in Fresno, California.

The executive director fo the Wausau Area Hmong Mutual Association says many would like to be able to travel to California for the actual funeral, but can't. So this service will give the community a chance to say goodbye.

Peter Yang, who has met General Pao on many occasions, says he was very well respected for being a Hmong advocate.

"The General has done a lot for the Hmong people and if you look at what he's done over the last 60 years, he's done so much," Yang said.

Yang says General Pao worked tirelessly for years for Hmong human rights, and for freedom and democracy in Laos.

The Hmong who were recruited by the United States CIA and fought on the side of the U.S. during the Vietman War were led by General Vang Pao.

Many in the Hmong community question whether another leader will emerge in place of General Pao... but Yang says there are many leaders currently fighting for the Hmong people.
