Empty Bowls Feed The Hungry

What's better than a warm bowl of soup on a chilly fall evening? How about a bowl of warm soup and feeding the hungry? On October 27th, you can do just that as The Neighbors' Place hosts their 5th annual Empty Bowls event.

"It's a very simple day, but it's for a purpose so needed in the community," The Neighbors' Place Kathy Rubino told NewsChannel 7.

The number of people who can't afford to buy food in our community is growing and as we near the holiday season the demand will increase even more. That's why Rubino is looking forward to the Empty Bowls event in October.

For a donation of $10, attendees will get a chance to sample a variety of signature soups from area restaurants. Afterwards, they'll each receive an empty hand-painted bowl to take home with them to serve as a reminder of hunger in the community.

Not only are these bowls a symbol, they're also another way you can get involved. For an additional $10 donation, you can go to The Clay House in Weston or Clay Corner Studio in Wausau and paint a bowl to be donated. So far Clay Corner Studio has collected over 400 bowls.

"We have kids that do handprints on them. We had one that just came in that said 'happy' on it. So we have a whole variety of designs that come through," owner of Clay Corner Studio Martina Strehlow said.

The Neighbors' Place is hoping the event will raise upwards of $14,000 so they can get those food pantry shelves stocked for the holidays.
