It's official, the public space in Wausau's downtown is named City Square.

Tuesday evening the city's common council voted 7-3 in a resolution naming the square. First, the 10 present council members voted which one of three finalists they'd prefer. City Square won with five votes, followed by 400 Block with four votes, and Freedom Square with one vote.

In a public vote, "400 Block" claimed nearly 60% of the vote. "City Square" accounted for 20% of the public vote.

District 12 Alderman Ed Gale voted for City Square.

"I did that because people in my district had asked for it," he said.

The public submitted more than 100 possible names for the public piece of land. The city's parks and recreation committee chose the ten finalists, and then the public had two weeks to choose their favorite.

The land, sandwiched between Third, Fourth, Scott and Jefferson Streets had often been referred to as "400 block."

Volunteers raised $1 million to renovate the square. Construction began this past fall and will continue this spring. Features will include a permanent stage, seating and an interactive fountain.

Gale, who fully supports the renovation, says no other city in Wisconsin has what Wausau has in City Square.

"This is one of the most versatile pieces of property downtown in any city," he said.

Organizers of the renovation project hope construction will be finished in time for all of the scheduled events at City Square.
