Courtrooms Temporarily Move to Lincoln Co. Service Center

Anyone who has to go to court in Lincoln County will have to make a detour for the next several months.

The 100-year-old courthouse is in the renovation process. For now, all court proceedings will temporarily take place at the Lincoln County Service Center.

Last week, courthouse employees moved their things about four miles from downtown, to N. Sales St.

"That includes both judges, the clerk of courts office, the registrar and probate office and the district attorney's office," said Susan Byrnes, the district court administrator for the 9th judicial district.

And that means if you have to go to court, or pay a ticket, you'll do so there.

"We are a little tight in this area but it will be worth it in the end, when we move back to our new area.. where we will be re-distributed throughout the courthouse," said Clerk of Court Cindy Kimmons.

Luckily the service center, which houses the County Clerk and UW-Extension, among offices, has enough room for now.

"The service center has been a really wonderfully flexible building. This building is approximately three years old, and when it was built, it was built with all modern specifications and data ports," Byrnes said.

The main challenge, however, will be jury trials.

The center's make-shift courtrooms are not jury compatible, so each Lincoln County case that requires one, will be done in a neighboring community.

Eight months from now the courthouse renovation will be complete. That means tighter security, spruced-up courtrooms, and better infrastructure.

Until then, the service center will have to do.

The project will cost $1.3 million dollars.
