Marathon Park's Ice Arena Needs $55,000 in Repairs

Marathon Park's major ice rink is in danger of being shut down, unless it's repaired soon.

According to the Park's Dept., the refrigeration system under the ice is leaking and pipes are worn.

Last year, $14,000 worth of coolant leaked, a cost Marathon County's director of parks, recreation and forestry doesn't want to repeat.

Bill Duncanson says if the $55,000 in repairs isn't made now, skaters will suffer.

"I believe that the county board understands the need to not only provide the recreation opportunities that the ice arena gives to our local skaters but it's also very important as far as our tourism in the winter," Duncanson said.

The county board will consider taking the money from the contigency fund at its monthly meeting this Thursday.

If the rink isn't fixed before the skating season, it's in jeopardy of failing and causing local hockey teams and figure skaters to find alternate rinks.
