The 2nd Street Community Garden in Wausau is growing into a worthwhile effort.
Last week volunteers from Home Depot built 20 plots on the land donated by Bridge Community Health Clinic, which is adjacent to the garden.
Now, the public is planting herbs, vegetables and flowers in the plots.
There are still about a half dozen available for rent. It costs $100 per plot, but they can be split, and a sliding fee scale is possible for those with financial hardships.
"This was really convenient, it's right next to where I work and a really reasonable cost, so I can get done with work and hop over here and pick some things and go home and cook with them," said Amie Leonoff, who rented a plot with her family.
Leonoff says garden-related classes are available for those who rent a plot. Vegetables grown from two community plots will be donated to The Neighbor's Place in Wausau.
If this community garden proves successful, organizers may start others throughout the area.
