Local Church Helps Man In Need by Hosting Chili Cook-off

Hundreds of area residents are helping out a community member in need this weekend, and getting some good eating too.

St. Andrews Lutheran Church in Rib Mountain held a chili cook-off today to help Vern Whereatt.

He suffers from Myeloma Renal Failure, a disease that attacks the kidneys and can sometimes be fatal.

Vern says, "I take one day at a time, that’s all you can do it doesn't help to sit and mope about what’s going on because it doesn't get you anywhere."

Event Organizers like Jerri Brunner say they want to support Vern. "You want to do something to help and with something like this there’s just very little that you can do and so in order to show our support and to help him out I thought we do a fundraiser.”

Today's cook-off included 8 cooks who brewed up mild to spicy batches of chili.

People then purchased tickets to come in to taste test, judge, and help out Vern and his family with some of their medical expenses.
So far the church has raised five thousand dollars to help them out.
