Security Measures at Wisconsin Valley Fair Taken Seriously

The Wisconsin Valley Fair is well underway, but big crowds are expected this weekend, and that means more security.

Coordinators with the fair say there have never been any major incidents. Security is still taken seriously.

Before the fair begins they have a meeting to discuss what measures will be taken. During the day anywhere between one and three police officers are present. That number goes up between 4:30 and 6 p.m. when as many as ten officers are out.

Extra measures are taken for concerts that draw big crowds.

"There are always a couple fights here and there but generally speaking, especially with the big crowd we had yesterday, it was pretty well behaved," says Maureen Pilsner, Safety Officer with the Wausau Police Department.

She says security is prepared to handle almost anything and that being stationed at the fair means a fast response time for emergencies.

Most visitors we spoke with at the fair say they have no worries.
Kevin Stevenson of Merrill was visiting with his daughters.

"They each have a cellphone," he says. "I have a cellphone and we have programmed our numbers in their phones so if they ever feel uncomfortable they just dial the number and we'll come to them."
