More than 200 people gathered yesterday in Madison for a moment of silence to remember a University of Wisconsin student slain last week, and a memorial vigil is planned at the school tonight for the same purpose.
Those who gathered yesterday said they take Brittany Sue Zimmermann's murder personally because they either live near her apartment, where her body was found Wednesday afternoon, or they lived in the area during their days as students.
A memorial vigil is to begin at 7:30 tonight in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union. It will include music from a UW-Madison string quartet, a display of photos and an opportunity for students to sign a condolence message to Zimmermann's family and share memories about her life on campus. The vigil will then move to Library Mall, where participants will light candles and circle around the fountain to observe a moment of silence.
Authorities have not said how Zimmermann was killed. Dane County Coroner John Stanley has said only that Zimmermann died from "a complexity of traumatic injuries."
