They say it only takes a few weeks for most people to start breaking their New Year's resolutions. Well, I haven't posted a blog since January 12th, so I think I'm even worse than average.
But here are a couple things I've been thinking about-
The Apple iPad:
They say this is a rather polarizing device, you love it or you hate it. (The same seems to be true of Apple as a company)
I've gotta say... I don't get it. Like the iPhone, it runs just one application at a time - no multitasking allowed. I don't know about you, but whenever I'm using my laptop or desktop computer, I have various programs running, and I'm hopping back and forth between applications. I find that's the most efficient way for me to get things done, and the iPad doesn't allow it.
The iPad also doesn't support Flash. This drives me crazy. Whatever Apple's reason for not supporting Flash, it doesn't make sense to me. Flash is everywhere on the web. Heck, even when Steve Jobs initially showed off the iPad, it took him just a minute or so to run into a site (the New York Times) that gave him an error because Flash wasn't supported. True, eventually Flash may be replaced by better technology, but for now, I can't take a device that's crippled on so much of the web as a serious browsing device.
Some of the other touted uses, like as a movie player or ebook reader, also don't make a lot of sense to me. Both require you to hold the 1.5 lb device in front of your face for hours, or lay it flat and hover over it. I'll take a laptop that sits on my lap, thank you.
That said, the iPad has some things going for it. The App Library that's been built for iPhone, and those furiously being written for iPad is impressive. Most people who have used one are impressed by the interface and touchscreen response. And, of course, it sure is nice to look at.
But even if I was sold that the iPad was a device I really could use, I would wait. Anyone who knows Apple knows that you don't have to wait to long before you start to see price drops and new iterations of their devices. If I could get an iPad that included Flash support and had a built-in camera, and was at least $100 cheaper, I'd be tempted.
How about this weather we've had the last month or so!? Our meteorologists have sure been getting some extra pats on the back lately, which is only fair because of the grief they take when mother nature isn't so kind. (I've always said it's a good thing people don't blame news anchors when bad news happens, because we'd be in trouble - although National Hug a News Person Day could help us cheer up!)
I'm hoping we get the far-above-average temps out of the way now, and don't have a scorching summer. I wouldn't mind so much, except my house has no A/C, AND....
