Acts of Christmas Kindness

To start off - I can't believe it's been so long since I've written a blog!  A commenter on Jeff Thelen's blog recently pointed out Jeff is one of the only ones who does a great job of regularly updating his blog.... I think I have one of my New Year's resolutions!

One of the great things about the Christmas season is seeing the truly inspiring kindness and generosity it brings out in people.  All of us at NewsChannel 7 just saw a first hand example of that generosity among our viewers.  In a tough year for our economy, we shattered our all-time record for money raised for our 'Share Your Holidays' campaign, raising more than $40,000 and countless boxes of food.  All of it goes to the Neighbor's Place and Salvation Army food pantries.  How inspiring! (If you watch the video you'll see Jeff, who's put his heart and soul into leading this campaign the last number of years, get a little choked up!)

The big things are easy to see, but there are so many little stories of Christmas acts of kindness.  One example that pops into my mind right away is from Christmas Eve a number of years ago.  I believe I was in grade school, and my family was on our way to visit my grandparents.  We decided we'd just stop at a restaurant drive-though and pick up a quick lunch on our way out of town.  We placed our order and pulled up to the window to pay.  The cashier popped her head out and, with a smile, said we could pull ahead to pick up our food.  A man in a Santa suit had given her a $100 bill to pay for the next few people in the drive-through.  He did it without wanting anything in return - he didn't even stick around to see the happy looks on people's faces as they heard their meals were paid for - but he certainly brightened the day for a few people, and gave us a fun story to tell!

I brought this topic up in the newsroom, and it seems nearly everyone has some story about an act of kindness they either witnessed or were a part of around Christmastime.  What's yours?

I hope you all have a blessed Christmas and very happy holidays!
