Tech @ 10: Mint.com

My secret's out: I'm a big technology junkie.

It's not something I get the chance to talk about on the air very often because not that many local technology stories come around. But there are always exciting new products or services that I'm anxious to talk about. That's the motivation behind my new 'Tech @ 10' series.

My focus for the first piece is a website called Mint.com. A financial website maybe isn't the most 'techie' topic, but I think it's very timely with the state of our economy, and it's something I've certainly been putting to use frequently. Mint has become one of my most visited sites on the web.

I was also excited for this story because I was able to get in touch with Aaron Patzer, who's the founder and CEO of Mint.com. When I spoke to him Monday, he had just finished leading a panel on the topic of finances for the new generation at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas. It was very nice of him to take some time to contribute to the story.

Check out the attached video for more info on Mint if you missed the story. Or just visit the site here: www.mint.com

There are a couple other websites I would have liked to focus on, but just didn't have time. They are www.quizzle.com and www.creditkarma.com. These are great financial websites as well, with budgeting tools and the like.... but the REAL draw to each of these sites is free access to your credit score. Each site just draws information from 1 of the 3 credit bureaus, so the score they'll give you is just approximate – but it should be pretty close to your actual FICO score. That FICO score can be purchased from www.myfico.com. And you can take a look at your full credit report once a year from EACH credit bureau at www.annualcreditreport.com. Don't trust everything you hear about other sites offering your credit report or score for 'free' – most of them have some very serious strings attached.

Hopefully you enjoy Tech @ Ten. I'm hoping to make it a weekly thing, but that means I need a lot of ideas. I'm hoping you can help me out. Is there a product or website that has made a big difference to you? Let me know! You can comment on the blog, email me at mlauber@wsaw.com, or drop me a 'tweet' on Twitter here: www.twitter.com/mikell.
