Winter guests

Here are two video clips I took of deer in my yard this winter... the first shows a young one nibbling on a lilac bush in December.  The second was taken the day before the big February snow storm.  At first I only saw the one deer, then the rest of the party emerged!  There is a few second gap between the two videos.  Stay with the second video to the end to see the party amble down the street!

While deer are frequent visitors to my neighborhood throughout the year, the winter stops especially can always include the possibility of some browsing on the shrubs and trees in the yard.  Normally lilac is not considered to be on the "favorites" list, but a deep snowcover (as we have had the past few months) can minimize the other forage opportunities, and lead to browsing on whatever is available.

SInce the transition to spring will apparently be slow this year, it is  likely there will be more visits, and more meals featuring some of the prized plants in the yard.  This applies not only to deer, but to our bunny friends as well.  For me, this means I need to get out the foul-smelling spray in the hopes of minimizing the damage.

For more information about plants that are more resistant to deer and rabbit browsing, please see my recent blog, "Mike's Weather Garden...Winter Update".
