In this blog, I celebrate the accomplishment of one of Wausau's native sons, as well as mourn the passing of a friend.
Earlier this fall, the University of Wisconsin-Madison honored Wausau native Jim Hoyt (photo above), Professor
Emeritus of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, with a room dedication and retirement reception.
Many in the area know the Hoyt family. Jim's father was the director of NorthCentral Technical College for many years.
Growing up in Wausau, Jim had an interest in radio and television, and even was a part of channel 7 during the early
years. He went on to become involved in television and specifically news, and eventually returned to Wisconsin to join
the UW-Madison faculty. For several years Jim was the Director of the School of Journalism, also Chaired the University
Athletic Board, and among other projects was involved with the development of the Kohl Center.
I got to know Jim after I had graduated from the UW-Madison. While studying meteorology, a fellow student and I
became involved in the Television News Production class in the J-school. At that time, the meteorology program
did not offer much training for those desiring a career in broadcasting. Upon graduation, a faculty member of the
J-school suggested I contact Jim for advice about landing a job in TV. That was the start of a friendship that has
continued to grow. Jim is always available to provide advice and insight to me as well as for the many, many people
who had the pleasure of being one of his students.
A few weeks ago, my friend Dave pased away after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Dave graduated from high
school a year ahead of me, and was a very gifted musician. He was an accomplished composer and arranger, as well
as a musician proficient on piano and bass guitar, and over the years was involved in a number of groups performing
styles ranging from rock to jazz to blues. Dave was well known in southern Michigan and northern Indiana. As a
tribute to him, I'd like to share some of his music. Here are YouTube links to two short videos from a PBS special filmed
in the 90's by one of Dave's bands, Mr.Edd. Dave is playing the keyboards.
