Another week and another storm is set to arrive for the start of the weekend in the Badger State.  After a significant snowfall last weekend in parts of southern and southwest WI, we finally had our first widespread accumulations on Thursday.  Most places picked up anywhere from 1-3", which was enough to break out the shovel and cause some tricky travel on area roads.  However the main events for Saturday and lingering into Sunday will be the moderate to heavy snow followed by a plunge in the temperatures.

First, here's the latest on the snow producer for Saturday. The latest weather computer guidance is continuing to take low pressure on a more northerly track out of the Rockies into northern Iowa and tracking due east across southern Wisconsin.  As I mentioned earlier, the farther north the low tracks, the better the odds are for a major accumulation of snow.  Also, with the track of the low going roughly 100-150 miles to our south, that puts a good portion of North Central Wisconsin in the "sweet spot" for the heaviest snowfall from this storm.  Here's the breakdown of who may see what by the time all is said and done on Sunday morning.

Snow will develop overnight Friday night into early Saturday from west to east in the region.  Bursts of heavy snow look to occur through the morning hours into the early afternoon.  Snowfall rates of 1 to 2" per hour are not out of the question, which needless to say would make travel extremely difficult.  As for potential total snowfall, my projections have increased.

-In the Northwoods from Forest and Vilas Counties down into Rhinelander, Tomahawk and Phillips, I am forecasting 7-12".  This would be a major snow storm, with whiteout conditions possible in the wake of the heaviest snowfall from Saturday night into Sunday with blustery winds out of the northwest at 10-20 mph.

-Across Central Wisconsin including Medford, Shawano, Wittenberg, Wausau, Stevens Point and Marshfield, I am anticipating 10-15".  I taper off the numbers just slightly farther south into Wisconsin Rapids and northern Juneau & Adams Counties with 7-12".  Once again a major snowstorm which will be wrapped up with blowing & drifting snow on Saturday night into Sunday.

-Farther south into the rest of Juneau, Adams and Waushara Counties I am forecasting 5-9" by the time all is said and done by Saturday night.

No less, once this storm exits, then the surge of frosty cold air out of Canada arrives.  Temperatures on Sunday and Monday will not make it out of the single digits during the daytime hours and overnight lows are primed to dip below zero Sunday night and Monday night.  Factor in brisk winds of 10-20 mph, and we'll likely have wind chills in the -10 to -20 degree range.  Needless to say a shock to the system.
