December is in full swing and the chilly, if not frigid air of winter is beginning to settle in across North Central Wisconsin. A storm system swinging down out of the Rockies and tracking through Southern Illinois Friday night into Saturday will produce some minor snowfall totals in Central Wisconsin, with a more appreciable amount farther south just outside of our viewing area down into Madison and back off to the west, as well as on the east side toward Milwaukee. Another interesting aspect with this storm is that winds will be coming out of the east off of Lake Michigan on Saturday and could cause a bit of lake enhancement to the snowfall in some of the SE lake shore counties.
All in all, the pattern with more snow falling to south and also to the north or northwest has held true into the early weeks of the winter weather season. Taking a peek down the road for the next 7 to 10 days, it appears the cold air will subside perhaps just for a bit around the middle to end of next week. In this case, we're talking temps that could get back into seasonable ranges for highs in the upper 20s to low 30s. Certainly anything higher than the 30s still is going to be few and far between for the weeks ahead as a whole.
No less, Granite Peak locally and many other ski hills in Wisconsin and the U.P. got their season started just about when they were hoping, right around Thanksgiving weekend. Not so much for the amount of snow falling naturally, but being below the critical temperature of 28 degrees to make snow. As for the snow mobilers and ice fishers out there, it will probably take until at least the 2nd half of the month before you can fully get out to enjoy the trails, or walk onto just about any frozen lake. In the meantime, there will eventually be a sizable snowfall and it is certainly going to get colder as time goes along. All winter weather comes to those who wait, especially in this part of the country.
