It wasn't just your imagination, but it is true that this April in North Central Wisconsin has featured less warm days than that of March. Through April 26th, here are the numbers:
April March
11 60+ Days 15 60+Days
2 70+ Days 9 70+ Days
Avg High 58.4 Avg High 55.3
Avg Low 34.8 Avg Low 36.3
Now even though when you take the averages, April does barely squeeze by March as a bit milder for the entire month, March certainly will be most memorable for those record warm days & nights. The main reason for the contrast in the weather locally is simply the placement of the jet stream and what storm systems rolled our way. The second half of March had a large ridge of high pressure located across the Mid-Atlantic states, which stayed put, pushing the jet stream to our north to allow for the warm air to settle in. By the time we flipped the calendar to April, the jet stream returned to a more typical position, cutting through the US, with various ebbs and flows of waves of low pressure bringing times of rain, cooler or milder conditions, and a fair number of brisk days. If anything, the ridge that did set up in the country ended up being farther west back across the Rockies to the west coast, where the last portion of the month featured a few days of rather warm weather.
So it seems the see-saw pattern of warm vs chilly conditions will finally start to slide more in the warm weather direction as May gets underway. Along with that will come more days with highs of 70+, along with better odds of thunderstorms. And if you've been keeping track at home, May does tend to really ramp up when it comes to severe weather. Thus keep checking back in for updates when stormy conditions are in the forecast.
