The calendar has turned to December and believe it or not, there have been some folks that are getting antsy for snow to fall across North Central Wisconsin. Well if the headline of this blog didn't already give it away, winter is going to begin to make it's presence felt in the western Great Lakes. This is going to include colder conditions and yes, the opportunity for snow.
Before I dive into the weather locally, let's talk about the forecast for the inaugural Big Ten Championship Game in Indianapolis on Saturday. As you may have already known, Lucus Oil Stadium has a roof, which makes it ideal to be playing a game in early December without worrying too much about what Mother Nature may be serving up outside. No less, for those making the journey and tailgating prior to the game, it will be relatively mild with partly to mostly cloudy conditions from the afternoon into the evening. I don't think there is going to be any wet weather to worry about, as the storm system affecting us in North Central Wisconsin will just be heading toward western Indiana by game time on Saturday. In other words, there have been chillier and wetter conditions out at Camp Randall than what you'll encounter in Indy. The temps & winds are detailed in the graphics below.
Meantime, back closer to home, some snow is once again in the forecast for the 1st weekend in December. If you'll recall last year at this time, we had a storm that dropped snow across the southern third of the state, from roughly Wisconsin Rapids & Stevens Point on south & east. Meantime, the remainder of the region was spared the white stuff until a week or two later when our first blizzard of the season showed up. This go around, I think more locations will get in on the accumulating snow than a year ago and it looks to be enough that you'd have to break out the shovels. The initial batch of light snow is expected to roll in on Saturday morning and be off and on in nature working through the midday and afternoon hours. To the south of about highway 10, there could be a mix of rain/snow at times, or even just plain old light rain showers. However as evening arrives, chillier air from the north will push in and along with the wave of low pressure tracking into the Badger State. More moisture follows, along with better odds of mostly snow.
This second punch of snow should be light to moderate in intensity and last through the night into the morning on Sunday before winding down from southwest to northeast. Although the exact path of the low is still a bit in question as of the writing of this blog, at least a few inches of accumulation are anticipated in a portion of our area from Saturday into Sunday morning. On the scale of the types of winter storms we see during the winter, this will fall in the category of nuisance to minor. No less, if you are going to be traveling over the weekend, please do so with care as roads will easily become snow covered and icy in nature.
Looking down the road into the first full week of December, a wave of chilly air sets up shop locally. Daytime temps from Sunday through at least Thursday may struggle to make it out of the 20s for highs, while overnight lows will range from the single digits to teens. For those ice fishers out there, I wouldn't get ready to tow the ice shanty out to the lake, but if you want to take part in ice fishing from the shore, there should be at least a thin layer of ice available by perhaps the end of next week.
