The month of October is more than half way over, and so far we have had one last gasp of summer and also a few frosty mornings. However, it is interesting to check out the record book for Wausau during this transitional month of autumn. Here are a few interesting tidbits. The warmest temperature ever recorded during this month was 91 degrees back on October 1st 1976, while the coldest was a frigid 8 above zero set back in 1925. Speaking of wintry weather, only a mere 18 years ago nearly 10 inches of snow fell on the 10th and back in 2002 on October 21st, almost 8 inches was measured in Wausau. This is also one of the few months where the record temperatures for a given day can either cause you to break out into a sweat or run for the parka. Take the record high and low temperatures for October 18th....83 degrees on the high end and 15 for the low. Before you break out the calculator that is a 68 degree spread.
Odds are that for October 2008, we have already experienced the warmest weather when readings approached 80 degrees during the 11th through the 13th. The way the weather pattern is shaping up, I'm not anticipating any readings to dip down into the teens in our area, but certainly morning lows in the 20s are likely to happen at least a few times. As for seeing our first flakes of the season, I'd prefer to keep that to at least November, but of course it has occurred numerous times in the past in October and believe it or not the climatological average amount of snowfall for the month in Wausau is 1.0". Sure enough, before the year is said and done, you'll likely be breaking out the snow shovel again, along with the warm winter coat.
On a side note, I'm extremely excited to see my hometown Philadelphia Phillies are in the World Series! It was 15 years ago when they last made it, and I can still vividly remember the pennant clincher against the Braves at Game 6 of the 1993 NLCS, which I was at in person. Things get a little fuzzy after that in regards to the World Series, a high scoring game 15-13 which the Phillies lost and some guy on the Blue Jays hitting a home run that dashed our championship hopes. This year's squad has really worked hard to get to this point and I think they've got as good a shot as any to go all the way. Needless to say I'll be glued to the tv when the game is on. Go Phillies!!
