It's LIke Christmas for Couch Potatoes

I'll be the first to admit it.  I'm a couch potato.  I wave the flag proudly (while laying in my easy chair watching TV, of course)  So this time of year is like Christmas.  It's fall premiere season!

Here are my early impressions.

I love the new "Hawaii 5-0!"  The first episode was great!  They made the smart move by keeping the same theme song from the classic.  The acting was fine and the story line was good.  Also, being lucky enough to have gone there last year, it's sort of fun checking out the scenery of the islands to see if I recognize anything.  I have to tell you I loved the scene where the "new" Steve McGarrett pulled back the tarp from over the car in his father's garage to reveal a gigantic black Mercury like they drove in the original series.  A clever wink and nod to the original.

Saturday night, I got the chance to check out the rebroadcast of the new Monday night show called "The Event."  Now, I'm glad I have a DVR to record both "Hawaii 5-0" and "The Event" since they're on at the same time.  "The Event" is hard to explain.  I didn't realize it was science fiction until the very end when the jet hurdling toward the president and his family vanished.  John Ritter's son Jason was very good in it.  Since it started with Tex and then went to John and now to Jason, you have to admit that's a very talented family.

"NCIS" is back again.  This is a show I never watched until last year when I got moved back to the morning show.  It's on a cable channel every afternoon and I started watching reruns at what is my ridiculously early bedtime.  Same for "The Office" and "Criminal Minds" which I never watched in their first run, but checked them out on cable.  Now, I'm hooked all three of them.  And the premieres of all three were great.  Too bad it's Steve Carrell's last year in "The Office."  He's the heart of the show.

Based on the 2 hour long premiere (actually it was back-to-back episodes, but who's counting) it looks like another good year for "Law and Order, SVU."  And Mariska Hargitay is a cute as ever.  I'm still a little ticked at NBC for canceling "Law and Order," but I'll give the new on in LA a try, anyway.

"Saturday Night Live" was pretty funny Saturday night.  Some will argue the classic is better than the current SNL.  But, I don't agree.  SNL has always had weak and strong years and even weak and strong sketches within one broadcast.  People just remember the funny stuff from their favorite era of SNL and forget that it had just as many unfunny clunkers that year as other seasons.

I have "Dexter" recorded from Sunday night but haven't had a chance to watch it.  But, based on past seasons, it will no doubt be great.  I also have "Family Guy" DVRed and waiting to watch.  I didn't think it was as funny last season as year's past, so we'll have to see what this year is like.

"48 Hours Mystery" had a very interesting story in it's premiere Friday night,  the late Harold Dow's last story.  "Real Time with Bill Mahar" is also back on.  I don't agree with too much of what Mahar says but think he's funny and it's always an interesting conversation.

They say you need to find what you love to do and turn it into your job.  Seriously, I need to look into becoming a TV critic to get paid to lay on the couch and watch TV.  Then, my life would be perfect.  (if Mariska Hargitay was in the living room with me)
