Don't Know What to Think About Health Care Reform. How About You?

I'm not sure what to think about health care reform.

I think the president was absolutely correct when he said we could reduce the cost of health care if we took better care of ourselves. On the other hand, I think he was wrong in his initial calls to get something so complicated passed by the end of the summer.

Deep down, I have to believe a lot of people would like to see some sort of reform. Insurance premiums are way too high. What my Dad had to pay from 62 until he retired and what my Mom, who is not retired (she won't want me to give her age) has to pay now is an absolute crime. And insurance companies that seem to always go out of their way not to have to pay for a proceedure is pretty frustrating.

On the other hand, I wouldn't want anything to even get near standing in the way of the best medical treatment available. And I really believe we have that between the Aspirus and the Marshfield Clinic systems in our area. Also Canadians drive here to get world class treatment, not believing that their socialized system is that great. And I don't think most people want the government in charge of health care, because the government can't seem to get much other stuff right.

I think the national media deserves some criticism as well. Seriously, how much coverage have you seen of what the proposal really is? Or has it all been just about the yelling at the town hall meetings and pundits from both sides of the isle screaming back and forth about the politics of it.

While I was on vacation last week, I had a national morning show on TV in the hotel room while I was getting ready for the day ahead. I honestly can't remember if it was Today, Good Morning America or The Early Show. Their their guests to talk about the issue were right wing extremist Ann Coulter and left wing extremist James Carville. They did the standard "I hate the other side" nonsense they're both so good at and I (and everybody else watching) learned absolutely nothing about the health care reform proposal. You'd think a national show could do better than that!

What do you think? You know what to do.
