Some stuff going on and a request for advice.

Hi all.

Here's what's going on in my life...

My Godson burned himself in a little accident with a burn pit. He has injuries in his arm and leg. I don't know exactly how it happened. It's just one of those things 4-year olds do when parents turn their head for one milli-second. I saw him when I went home last weekend. He's a tough kid. Faces all his check-ups head on and is playing like it never happened. The best news is the Doc says he'll be just fine.

We celebrated my Godmother's 75th birthday this last weekend. It was supposed to be a surprise, but word leaked out. She had gone to visit a friend in a nursing home several days before the party. While she was there, the mail arrived. So the friend asked her to get it in. The mail contained a letter from my Godmother's daughter, so the friend in the nursing home just told her to open it right up. It was the invitation to the surprise party. What are the chances?

I had a scare with my dog. The vet had mistakenly prescribed the wrong medication for a condition she was fighting, so it only got worse. That prompted me to make up my mind that it was time to euthanize her. So, I took her to the vet and we discovered it was the wrong medication. When the prescription was fixed, she was fine. I learned during the ordeal that I'm not going to be brave when the time comes to put her down. I think that's the hardest I cried since my Grandma's died. My buddy Al says "I don't care if you're the toughest old lumberjack in the world. When you have to put your dog down, you're going to cry."

I'm still trying to get used (or re-used) to my new (or old) shift. Sundays are the toughest. I was doing well Sunday afternoon, actually dozed off around 4pm. But after crawling into bed at about 5pm, my neighbor decided it was a good idea to use his chain saw to take care of some logs on his property. So much for getting to sleep that night. I really can't yell at people for that sort of behavior, however. It's my lifestyle that's wierd, not someone who makes noise at 5pm.

And now I need your advice. I had my porch redone. It looks great! Part of the plan was to replace my front door. But the I hit my limit on the budget. So, I'm going to paint the one that's there already. It's one of those steel doors that have never been painted. I've looked online, asked at the home improvement store and talked with family and friends who've done this and I've gotten about 800 different pieces of advice for the best way to do it. Have you ever painted a steel door? If so, what's worked for you? Or better yet, just come over and do it for me. Just kidding.

Thanks to everyone for the advice on the door!

I did the project over the weekend.  I took the door down and put it on saw horses in my garage.  Then, I lightly sanded it and washed it down.  I used a small foam roller and small foam brush.  On the advice of the guy at the home improvement store, I did not use a primer.  He said I would only need it, if the door was down to the bare metal.  On the outside, I painted it with Rustoleum and on the inside, I painted it with some leftover paint from my living room walls (the room the door leads into).

And I have to say it looks really good.  I think the outside will last well, because it's hidden under a good sized porch so it's protected from the elements.  Plus, it's my front door and my side door gets a lot more use.  I didn't paint that because it leads to the kitchen and I plan to redo that in a few years.  So I'll just make it part of that project.  As for the inside of the door I did do, who knows?  It's the one the dog always jumps up on when the mailman comes.  So, I may have to do a lot of touching up as time goes on.

Again, thanks for all the advice.
