Odds & Ends

Odds & Ends

Hi all. A few things are on my mind this week.

I've set a new record for Christmas shopping. I actually found something that's absolutely perfect for someone on my yearly list, so I bought it. ON JANUARY 25th!!! I've bought stuff early before, but that's a new record. Hopefully I won't forget it's in my closet.

A couple of my favorite TV shows are back on. Battlestar Galactica and The Closer. If you haven't seen these shows and you like good TV dramas, give them a try.

Battlestar is not the same childish sci-fi show from the 70's. The updated version is a very dark look at human behavior. Every single actor, especially Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell, is outstanding! It's in it's last season, so you might want to rent the DVD and watch the previous seasons, if you haven't seen them.

The Closer stars the marvelous Kyra Sedgwick as a police detective who comes off as pretty daffy, but is great at what she does. It's a little more standard TV cop drama stuff than Battlestar, but still very good.

The Badgers are having a disappointing season. I guess every once and a while you'll have that. I still have the utmost confidence in Bo Ryan as a coach, so I have no doubt that after one year of rebuilding with young players, they'll be back better than ever. Honestly, I don't have as much faith in the football program or it's leadership right now.

Nice to see the Brewers get some of their best talent signed to new contracts. Fielder and Hardy. I have some guarded optimism about the team, if they can get some pitching to go with it. And I don't blame CC at all for going where the money is. Still, I'm hoping they lose every single game they play this year.

On the serious side, the trial for James Emerson, the man accused of killing Rhonda Mertes in Wausau a decade ago is finally getting underway. I'll avoid giving any opinion on it until after the case. And it could take up to a month, so it'll be a while before I talk about it.

How do you think the new President is doing? I've heard from conservative friends mockingly calling him "our anointed savior" says he'll be the end of our country. I've also heard my liberal friends say he's fantastic. You know what? It's too early to tell! I will say that an inauguration, no matter who wins, always makes me feel upbeat. The fact that we can transfer power peacefully is a very good thing.

OK, that's about it this week. If you want to comment on any of these subjects or talk about something else, you know what to do.

By the way, I'll be covering the Emerson trial and on vacation, so it could be a while before I get to updating the blog.
